Interim Equites insigniores, qui et Illustres dicti, ius lati clavi non secus, ac Senatores habuisse, ex Dione notavit Lipsius ad Tacitum. Sed ita diu non obtinuisse illud declarat, quod Praefecti Praetorio, qui ferme ex Equitibus legebantur, laticlavii ius non habuêre. Non solum autem Equites Illustres, sed et eorum filios ius huius clavi habuisse, ex Ovidio patet, qui, ubi ad aetatem Senatoriam pervenêre, cum nolebant, aut non poterant in amplissimum ordinem adscribi, angustum resumebant.
